"They don't know what it took to get here. Three hundred and thirty-eight toilets cleaned, seven types of government assistance, nine separate moves, one night on the ferry station floor and the entire third year of my daughter's life."

"The Maid" is a limited Netflix series based on the memoir of Stephanie Land titled "Maid: Hard Work, Live Pay, and a Mother's Will to Survive." It's focused on a 25-year-old mother named Alex, who leaves her alcoholic boyfriend and becomes a maid to make ends meet.

Struggling with poverty and homelessness, she's working hard to provide for her three-year-old daughter. Yet no matter what she achieves, there's always another obstacle that seems to get in her way, whether it's dealing with her boyfriend's addiction or her mother's mental illness. As a result, finding the light at the end of the tunnel becomes increasingly complex for her.

"The Maid" is a heartbreaking story that draws attention to the poverty in America and the different levels individuals may have for how they got there. In addition, the series explores other essential issues in our society, such as alcoholism, domestic violence, mental illness, and the flaws in our welfare system.

If you are looking for an emotional series with phenomenal acting and complex characters, this is it. I admit that it is slow-paced, so it may take a while to get into, but each episode gets more intense.
