Netflix’s original show “Spinning Out” reminds me of one of my favorite Disney movies, Ice Princess. They both show what life is like as a figure skater and how much pressure each athlete has to go through in order to get closer to their dream of competing in the Olympics.
Spinning Out takes it one step further though by tackling other issues such as mental illness, sexual assault, and racial inequality. It is similar to 13 Reasons Why where you get involved in each character’s story line and also understand more of the issues that people are actually going through in the real world.
The main character, Kat Baker, is a figure skater who had an intense fall during one of the sessions, and ever since then, she hasn’t been the same. Her fear of falling again prevents her from reaching new heights in her skating career and causes her to fall behind her peers in the competition. On top of that, she’s dealing with her mother’s bipolar disorder and the effect it has on herself and her family life.
Justin Davis is the “bad boy” who is always partying and participating in wild antics. Although he may act like a douche-bag sometimes, he’s actually a sweetheart underneath who acts tough in order to prevent himself from getting hurt. He’s also a figure skater and he’s the one pushing Kat to get over her fear so they can make it to the Olympics together.
Each 1-hour episode of the show helps you relate more to the supporting cast characters who each have their own struggles too.
Marcus Holmes is one of those supporting characters who have an all too relatable story. He’s the restaurant manager of the hotel lodge Kat works in and he is also pursuing a career in professional skiing. As an African American, he faces racism such as stereotyping and police injustice.
Unfortunately, Netflix has decided to cancel the second season of the show due to the lack of viewership it has received since being released earlier in January this year.
I personally believe that not many people knew about it since Netflix didn’t promote it as much as they promoted other shows (Tiger King for example). Spinning Out is honestly worth watching and there is a chance it could be renewed since thousands of people have been signing a petition asking for a second season.
