“Becoming” is a memoir about Michelle Obama’s journey from the South Side of Chicago to her life in the White House as our former first lady. She shares her story in order to inspire others to use their voice and share their story as well. Not only can individuals relate to her experiences, but valuable lessons are taught by an influential person.
Six Lessons
Don’t be afraid to put yourself first so you can have the room and resources to serve others.
Regardless of your background, you can achieve whatever you set your mind to as long as you stay focused on your vision.
Don’t ever let stereotypes or judgment define who you are, you are the only one who can define yourself.
Never let fear stop you from asking for help when you need it.
Remain hopeful, even in the darkest moments.
You MATTER: Your voice matters, your story matters and do not let anyone tell you any less
"Becoming" Epilogue Quote:
“And here is what I have to say finally: Let’s invite one another in. Maybe then we can begin to fear less, to make fewer wrong assumptions, to let go of biases and stereotypes that unnecessarily divide us. Maybe we can better embrace the ways we are the same. It’s not about being perfect. It’s not about where you get yourself in the end. There’s power in allowing yourself to be known and heard, in owning your unique story, in using your authentic voice. And there’s grace in being willing to know and hear others. This, for me, is how we become.”
I strongly encourage you to read Michelle Obama's memoir and watch her documentary on Netflix for more inspiration. The official YouTube trailer is below:
