10 Ways to Stay on Track with your 2020 Goals

“New year new me” is often a phrase that we hear every single year. Do people actually follow up on their new year resolutions? No, according to a study published in the Journal of Clinical Psychology, only 46% of people who made New Year’s resolutions were successful.

Given how 2020 has been a crazy year so far, the statistics might be less for the next study. However, if you have not yet accomplished any of your goals for this year, remember that you still have plenty of time.

Counting this month, you officially have five months left before 2020 is over. Below are some methods you can use to become closer to achieving your goals:

  1. Make sure your resolutions are specific. Do not be vague by saying something like “I want to lose weight”. How much weight do you want to lose? What are you going to do to help you lose weight? Be specific.

  2. Write your goals down, ways you can achieve that goal, and struggles you may face. You can use a journal, phone notes, or spread post-it notes throughout your bedroom or bathroom.

  3. If you have a vision board already, I would advise you to create a new one that takes into account the restrictions from COVID-19. You could do the old fashion method or create a digital one that you can set up as your phone home screen or print out for your room. It’s pretty simple as you can use Google Slides, Canva, Phonto, or Adobe Photoshop to create one.

  4. Avoid procrastination - do not wait until the last minute to accomplish your goals. Create a plan and stick to it.

  5. Take small steps to build your new habit - take 30 minutes out of your day to work towards that goal or schedule time for each week to solely focus on that task.

  6. An effective support system helps a lot so share your resolutions with family or friends. They can hold you accountable by doing a weekly or monthly check-in with you.

  7. Reward yourself after finishing one of your goals. Buy a Frappuccino from Starbucks, pamper yourself, or do something fun. Keep the list of rewards by you so that you can constantly be motivated.

  8. Limit the number of resolutions you have and focus on achieving just a handful. For example, if you have 15 resolutions, you will most likely not be able to focus on every single one successfully. Try to limit it down to at least five resolutions that you can accomplish.

  9. Use technology to help keep you on track. Set reminders or create to-do lists with the reminder application of your phone or download applications such as Google Calendar, Todoist, Asana, and Trello.

  10. If you fall off track, do not give up. Instead, evaluate where you went wrong and figure out a strategy to get back on track. Keep trying until you get it right and remember that you can get through it!
