The Impact of Dan Schneider's Childhood Shows on Nickelodeon: Quiet on Set Documentary Insight

The "Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV" documentary has taken the internet by storm. It focuses on child actors from beloved Nickelodeon shows under the reign of Dan Schneider and the toxicity of his work environment. There were interviews with child actors such as Alexa Nicholas, Drake Bell, Katrina Johnson, Liam Frierson, Racquel Lee Bolleau, Giovanni Samuels, Kyle Sullivan, and more.

Dan Schneider was Nickelodeon's "golden boy"—the creator of All That, The Amanda Show, Kenan & Kel, Drake & Josh, iCarly, Victorious, Zoey 101, Sam & Cat, etc. As Schneider became successful and influential, his work environment grew incredibly hostile. Gender discrimination, racism, and sexual harassment are just some situations cast members dealt with. Schneider also had a lot of creepy and sexualized jokes on shows that child actors had to do.

Child actors felt they couldn't complain or push back against Dan Schneider because their financial success helped their families. Schneider terrified and intimidated people because he had the power to make or break their careers. For example, Bryan Hearne was removed from the  "All That" series because his mom constantly stood up for him.

There were also a few pedophiles on set: Jason Michael Handy, Brian Peck, and Isel Channel. Jason Michael Handy was a production assistant who was sentenced to six years for child pornography as he had numerous Ziploc bags full of panties and other "tokens" at his residence.

Nickelodeon's acting and dialogue coach, Brian Peck, had a portrait drawing and letters from John Wayne Gacy at his residence. Peck groomed and molested Drake Bell (Drake & Josh / The Amanda Show) for months before his arrest. At court, he had letters of support from 41 people in the industry, including Rider Strong and Will Fierdel from "Boy Meets World." After a sixteen-month sentence, he was released and worked on Disney Channel for "Suite Life of Zack & Cody," even though he was a sex offender.

After watching the documentary, I can't help but feel terrible for what these child actors had to go through behind the scenes. Growing up, I used to watch all of Schneider's shows, and looking back, I see some scenes that were sexualized, especially in "Victorious," starring Ariana Grande and Victoria Justice. While we have been watching these shows for entertainment, these actors were going through horrors that have impacted how they grew up as adults.

Drake Bell was molested as a teenager and struggled with alcohol and substance abuse as an adult. Amanda Bynes was the sweetheart who was in numerous roles in the 2000s, but she succumbed to drugs and legal problems. Bynes isn't in the documentary to discuss her experience, but her cast members reflect on some of the situations they witnessed.

Nickelodeon should've had more legal precautions to protect child actors from menacing executive producers like Dan Schneider and predators like Brian Peck. Schneider was making a lot of money for them then, but he was also getting questionable complaints. I am curious to know if Disney Channel had a similar work environment as several Disney child actors had went through substance abuse and legal problems in adulthood.

Although the documentary may shift how you view some of your favorite childhood shows, you should watch "Quiet on Set" because it is very insightful about what experiences these child actors may face. You may blame the parents, the network, or both, but it's an absolute must-watch.
