Netflix’s hit comedy-drama, “On My Block”, is about four childhood friends navigating high school and the constant struggles they face in their dangerous neighborhood of South Central, Los Angeles.
On My Block is one of the first shows that I have watched that has such a diverse cast from African American and Hispanic backgrounds. However, diversity isn’t the only good thing about the show as each character has qualities and a unique story-line that sets them apart from the others.
Ruby is the nerd in the group who is always brainstorming solutions and can talk his way out of a situation. Jamal is the dramatic one who is constantly overthinking things and feels ignored from not always being heard in his friend group.
Cesar is the sweet one who is just trying to survive in the streets by not becoming apart of his brother’s gang, the Santos. Monse is the headstrong one who is the glue tying their friendships together when drama threatens to tear their friend group apart.
The tight-knit bonds these friends have will make you reminisce about what your life was like in high school and the childhood friendships that you use to (or still do) have.
At times, this show can become a bit frustrating as it tends to leave questions unanswered especially with the season 3 finale that came out in March this year. Yet overall, it’s a binge-worthy show that has good plot lines, humor, tons of nostalgia, and an amazing music soundtrack.
P.S: Glitter by 070 Shake is now one of my favorite songs!
