Locke & Key Review

What if I told you that there's a magical key somewhere in the world that will allow you to go inside your head and relive all of your hidden memories? Or that there was a key that can take you anywhere in the world with one simple click? Would you try to find these keys or act as if you didn’t know they exist?

Well, Netflix's original series “Locke & Key” are about three siblings discovering magical keys after moving into their ancestral house following their father’s murder. Based on the bestselling graphic novels, this show is a suspenseful dark fantasy that reminds me of one of my childhood favorites, The Chronicles of Narnia. Yes, Chronicles of Narnia, except these kids aren’t stepping into a wardrobe that takes them to a different place but are collecting magical keys that each have different purposes.

While the Locke siblings are searching for these magical keys, they are discovering secrets about their father’s teenage years. Amidst their quest, they are also battling a conniving villain that is desperate to take all of the keys from them.

One thing that I loved about this show (minus the adventurous aspect) is how the gender norms are reversed. The dad was the organized one who cooked, read bedtime stories to the kids, and signed their permission slips. The mom lacks organizational skills, doesn’t cook, and fixes things around the house. It’s not often that we can see this change since shows often display the mom as the organized one who cooks and cleans, while the dad focuses on his job and fixes things around the house. So, it’s nice to have a refresher.

I will admit that it’s hard for me to explain this show without revealing too many details. You’ll often find yourself being mad at the characters for some of the stupid mistakes they make and some moments are dreadfully cliche. However, just know that it’s a pretty good show that will have you wondering the whole time what will happen next. If you are into fantasy shows or books, you won’t regret watching Locke & Key.
