Based on the bestselling novel by author Celeste NG, Hulu’s drama adaptation of "Little Fires Everywhere" is absolutely amazing.

A single mom, Mia Warren (played by Kerry Washington), and her teenage daughter move into Shaker Heights, Ohio in the 1990s. There, the family becomes intertwined with the rich and entitled Richardson household.

Elena Richardson (played by Reese Witherspoon) is the landlord of the apartment the Warrens are staying in. She serves as the villain of the show as she tends to hide her racism behind a false pretense of kindness and instills some of those racist views within her own children.

Kerry Washington and Reese Witherspoon play their roles exceptionally well, which isn’t that much of a shock since they are both amazing actresses. The instrumental music soundtrack only intensifies the acting and scenes more.

Throughout the show, important topics are explored such as interracial relationships, white privilege, race discrimination, racial microaggressions, and postpartum depression. Below are my top twelve problematic quotes from scenes that happened within the first season. Once you watch the show, you will understand the full context behind them.

My Top 12 Problematic Scene Quotes:

  • "A lot of landlords, when they see a single black mom, they don’t want to rent to me.”

  • “Well, with all the affirmative action stuff, you’ll be a shoe-in practically anywhere.”

  • “They try to discourage minorities from taking advanced classes.”

  • “I mean, whether you’re black, or a girl, or like both, when something like that happens to one of us, it happens to all of us you know?”

  • “Well, you know, I once told Brian that I’m sure someone in his family is white because of his mom’s hair, you know?.... And then he got super offended.”

  • “Since Lexie realized having a black friend gives her street cred with Brian.”

  • “Elena, you made this about race when you stood out there in the street and begged me to be your maid.”

  • “See that is exactly what happens when they (referring to African Americans) don’t go to college.”

  • “What does race have to do with anything?..... I wasn’t raised to see people as colors”

  • “You are a white girl dressing white dolls as blackface.”

  • “Whenever I tell people I got into Princeton, the first thing that goes through their head is ‘oh it’s because he’s black'.”

  • “Race isn’t everything... It’s not the only thing that matters.”
