ATL Adventures (pt 1)

Imagine walking in a tunnel and looking overhead for one second to see a stingray swimming right over you. Would you be in awe or slightly freaking out?

Well, you can check out this tunnel exhibit at the Georgia Aquarium, the largest one in the United States that has 700 species of aquatic wildlife and 10 million gallons of water.

Although it was interesting, I was more worried about the glass potentially breaking and allowing tons of water to drown us amidst these marine animals falling on top of us (I can be a graphic visualizer sometimes).

Another attraction they had was this penguin exhibit where you can stick your head inside of a glass and be face-to-face with multiple penguins. Think of how you may want to greet penguins from Happy Feet, but being able to do so in a safer way that protects you and the beloved creatures at the same time.

In 2018, I traveled to Atlanta, Georgia for the first time on a family vacation. To this day, I am proud to say that I planned the entire trip from beginning to end. If it were up to my family, we most likely would have been indecisive over what to do without getting anything done the entire time.

We stayed in the outskirts of Atlanta, in a resort-style apartment that felt more like a loft. I am talking about a large bedroom at the top of the stairs with a bathroom and then different rooms downstairs along with a balcony, bathrooms, kitchen, and family room. You can see a better visual of what I am talking about in the video at the end of this post.

The first tourist stop was Georgia Aquarium and then our next one was a must-see destination, Cascade Skating Rink. It has been a dream of mine to go to Cascade ever since I first watched one of my favorite movies, ATL. I always thought that it would be exactly like how it was in the film (an unrealistic expectation, I know).

It is safe to say that I was sadly disappointed. I think it was because we went on a bad day, Sunday, which is considered an adult night. So, there was slow music and skating but not too many skaters doing choreography or getting “turnt” like how it was in the movie.

Fortunately, everything else about the trip was pretty amazing. I got to tour one of my dream journalism companies, the CNN Headquarters (no, they are not “fake news”). I was able to see all the magic happen from a room full of computers to the background scenes of the production. On top of that, the main lobby downstairs is like a mini-mall with a big food court, Cartoon Network store, CNN store, and an Atlanta gift shop.

We also did other things on the trip like tour downtown, eat southern food, and visited this spot that reminds me of Wynwood Walls in Miami, Florida. After we left Atlanta, we traveled to Covington to see the fictional town of Mystic Falls from The Vampire Diaries. You can read more about that trip here.

Below is a video of my first trip to ATL, and I will be dropping a part two post about my second experience there so stay tuned! If you have any travel experiences you would like to share, feel free to comment or use the contact form below :)
