All American Review

If we don't fight for each other, who else is going to

I love football dramas; Friday Night Lights and The Game are still some of my favorite shows. There’s just something about the special brotherly bond the football teams have and how they are always there for each other no matter what. Additionally, you can never tell whether they will win a game or not, so it’s like watching an abridged version of an actual football game.

If you are looking for a new sports drama to watch, you should check out All American from the CW Network. It’s about the life of Spencer James, a rising football player at South Crenshaw High School.

Coach Billy Baker eventually recruits him to play for the football team at Beverly Hills High, and Spencer seizes the opportunity. Based on a true story, this show is about the life of NFL athlete Spencer Paysinger.

However, I must admit that the one thing that genuinely appealed to me about All American is that most of the main characters are African American. Unfortunately, there aren’t too many shows now that showcase all of the daily struggles we go through, such as racism, police injustice, mental health, peer pressure, and much more.

Spencer James may be a fantastic football player, but he’s battling his demons off the field. Trying to figure out his identity, Spencer is working on connecting the ties between his home, South Crenshaw, to the new life in Beverly Hills.

Tamia Cooper is Spencer’s best friend. Coop encourages him to take on new opportunities and not worry about everything happening in his hometown, like her involvement in the local gang.

Billy Baker is the Beverly Hills High School Head Coach. He serves as a father figure to Spencer and the team but has his secrets.

Olivia Baker is Coach Baker’s daughter. She’s my favorite character because she’s so nonjudgemental and shows compassion for other people. Although she is a recovering drug addict, she is constantly rescuing other people from their issues.

Some other characters and storylines make All American worth it. It’s a show about football and family and has incredible life lessons for everyone watching. If you happen not to like season one (as some people don’t), please continue watching because seasons two and three are much better.

You can stream All American on the CW website or watch all three seasons on Netflix.

In the comments or contact form below, let me know if you watch it or have any show recommendations. I have also recently created a Google Form to submit shows you would like me to review, and a random drawing will take place every month. You can find the link in my Instagram bio :)
