The Umbrella Academy Review

“The clock is ticking on doomsday. Just tell me that when I need you, you’ll be ready.” – Five

Anyone who loves superhero shows and owns a Netflix account has probably watched this popular original, which usually lands on the top ten list. The final season premiered this summer, and I'm still feeling the loss.

Based on comic books and graphic novels created by Gerard Way, forty-three people are born to different mothers at the same time. Seven adopted individuals trained to become a superhero group known as "The Umbrella Academy." Each sibling brings something different to the group, and their powers mesh well together.

Each sibling has unique powers:

  • Luther has super strength

  • Diego can target throw knives

  • Allison can force people to obey her with a whisper

  • Klaus can interact with ghosts and come back to life

  • Number 5 time travels

  • Vanya is an explosive mystery until later

Season one was about the siblings reuniting after their father's death to figure out what happened to him. They also fight to prevent an apocalypse that will wipe out the entire world.

As the series progresses into three more seasons, chaos ensues, and each sibling must adapt and utilize their power to fight off any evil forces. The family is exceptionally chaotic, as they constantly bicker, but if any of them is in trouble, they will go through hell and back to be there for one another. They are constantly fighting to save the world from the apocalypse.

Although I'm not necessarily the biggest fan of the series finale, it is a good show with comedic moments and enough fighting to keep viewers engaged in each episode. Also, I love the Umbrella Academy show introductions. They're unique in that they go into a scene and then do the title after using an object to form the shape of an umbrella.

Spoiler Alert - My Thoughts on the Final Season

I'm not a fan of how Number 5 was having an affair with Diego's wife, even if they were stuck in a time travel thing together for years. They could've had Number 5 fall in love with anyone else in the show, and Diego wouldn't have to be heartbroken. Also, I don't particularly appreciate how the Hargreeves family had to die at the end of the series to prevent future apocalypses from occurring. This is one of the shows where it could have been a happy ending. It could have been a final apocalypse they fought against, and they all returned to an everyday world together. Ben would have his girlfriend, Allison would have Claire, Diego would have his kids, and the other siblings could work regular jobs or travel.
