"Connections make things happen."

Before Aubrey Grahams was an award-winning rap artist known as "Drake," he starred as Jimmy Brooks in this Canadian teen drama series called Degrassi: The Next Generation in 2001.

Growing up, it was one of those shows I was forbidden to watch but did so anyway as I was hooked on all of the drama, romance, humor, and relatable characters in the show.

I started watching the TeenNick show in the later seasons after the original cast had already moved on. However, HBO Max recently released all fourteen seasons of Degrassi: The Next Generation, which allowed me to watch from the very beginning.

Since 1979, the “Degrassi” franchise has had six main series: The Kids of Degrassi Street, Degrassi Junior High, Degrassi High, Degrassi: The Next Generation, Degrassi: Next Class, and another revival series will premiere on HBO Max in 2023.

The franchise was a force to be reckoned with as it broke the boundaries with its storytelling and set a precedent for the numerous teen series we have seen thus far.

The show's creators developed different characters and showcased realistic depictions of what adolescents may experience as they transition from childhood to adulthood.

They explored multiple topics such as teen pregnancy, eating disorders, racial discrimination, bullying, cybersecurity, mental illness, domestic abuse, peer pressure, sexuality, etc.

If you are looking for a teen drama to watch that has cheesy moments and different stories that will pull at your heartstrings, this show should be on your list.

There is a reason why Degrassi: The Next Generation is considered an icon of its generation, and it's not just because Drake and Nina Dobrev were a part of the cast.
