Beauty in Black Review
“When you have real money, there’ll always be somebody that you have to get before they get you.” - Mallory
If you merged the explosive family drama of Empire with the glamour-soaked chaos of Dynasty, you’d end up with something very close to Beauty in Black. Tyler Perry, known for Madea and the Why Did I Get Married? films, returns with a drama series that leans fully into high-stakes secrets, messy relationships, and over-the-top family power plays.
At its core, Beauty in Black follows three strippers—Kimmie, Rain, and Angel—each fighting for a better life. Their worlds collide with the notorious Bellaire family, the owners of a vast and influential beauty empire. And the Bellaires? They redefine dysfunctional.
Mallory Bellaire, sharp-tongued and calculating, runs the company with a steel spine and a collection of cutting comebacks. Horace Bellaire, despite struggling with a hidden health issue, still manages to pull the family’s strings. Norman is determined to gain more control of the company while secretly running an illegal trafficking operation on the side. Charles prefers partying over responsibility, while Roy is a walking disaster—a cheating, unreliable drug addict. Even Jules, the head of security, knows enough of the family’s darkest secrets to potentially bring the entire empire crashing down.
The Bellaires are deceitful, murderous, and endlessly secretive—and that volatile combination is what gives the show its spark. Beauty in Black isn’t without its flaws. The acting can be uneven, and at times, the production has a noticeable “Tubi-original” feel. But if you’re willing to overlook those rough edges, the series delivers enough jaw-dropping drama, comedic moments, betrayal, and twisty family intrigue to make it surprisingly addictive.
Season 3 Thoughts
Season 3 continues to pile on the drama and there are definitely a few storylines that have me invested.
I’m glad Mallory and Kimmie are friends now. I think their alliance will be beneficial for both of them. After everything they’ve been through, it’s nice to see them finally working together instead of against each other.
I love Rain, but she’s definitely becoming power-hungry and acting like she’s untouchable this season. Unfortunately, she’s in for a rude awakening. She should have taken the time to actually talk to that woman and get more information before making assumptions. And finding out that Jules is part of that organization too? I definitely didn’t see that coming.
I cannot stand Sylvie. How do you turn down an opportunity just to go back home to a terrible mother and her predatory boyfriend who only seems interested in getting money? She should have stayed with Kimmie until they could get her into college and therapy. Now that she’s gone, I honestly don’t even feel bad for her.
Horace and Norman shooting each other? I definitely didn’t see that coming, and I’m hoping Horace survives the shooting. His sudden hostility toward Kimmie is also unsettling, especially considering how much he has cared about her and been there for her over the past two seasons.
Charles going to rehab instead of Roy? I honestly never expected that. Charles definitely needs help, though, and I’m glad the storyline is giving him an opportunity to confront some of his issues and hopefully get the therapy and mental-health support he needs.
And as for Roy and Olivia still being locked up in jail, I’m honestly fine with it. After everything they’ve done, I have no complaints about them facing the consequences for their actions.
